Nine-day novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Expectant Mother of God.
- Masses attended by Filipino Catholics in anticipation of Christmas.
- This tradition begins on December 16 (or December 15 when celebrated in the evening) and culminates on the morning of December 24.
What does Simbang Gabi symbolize?
Simbang Gabi symbolizes deep faith, spiritual preparation for Christ’s birth, community unity, and enduring hope.
Why is Simbang Gabi 4am?
Simbang Gabi – The Mass usually begins at four o’clock in the morning. Pope Sixtus V ordered that Mass must be heard before sunrise since it was the harvest season, and farmers needed to be in the fields right after the liturgy. Simbang Gabi is also celebrated in malls, usually in open spaces.
What are the benefits of attending Simbang Gabi?
This tradition brings to the forefront the power of faith, the importance of family, and the strength of community. Just as Mary prepares for the birth of Jesus, we, too, prepare spiritually for the Season. I’ve helped plan Simbang Gabi for years and it always warms my heart because it fosters a sense of unity.
